1. Verify the need. You will need a tax identification number for your business if you employ staff, are designated as a corporation or partnership, file Employment, Excise or Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tax returns, participate in a Keogh plan, or are involved with certain types of organizations that include estates, non-profits and plan administrators.

2. File an application by fax, mail, online or by calling a toll-free phone number. Processing time for mailed applications is four weeks, four days for faxed applications and less than 30 minutes for online or telephone service. Visit IRS website for the appropriate links for obtaining application forms.

3. Know when a new ID number is needed. A business must get a new tax ID number only if ownership has changed hands or the business has been given a new designation. If you operate as a Sole Proprietor, Corporation, Partnership, Estate or Trust check with the IRS to see if your circumstances will exempt you from having to get a new tax ID number.
