How to Hand-Roll a Joint
-
1
Select a clean, dry, flat surface on which to roll your joint, like a counter or table top.
-
2
Open your tobacco pouch, checking that the tobacco is clean, dry and easy to separate.
-
-
3
Separate out a rolling paper.
-
4
Place your paper within easy reach on your flat surface, making sure the glued edge (if there is one) is facing up and towards you.
-
5
Roll a small piece of medium-weight paper, like an index card or cigarette box, into an S-shape and place it inside the left end of your rolling paper.
-
6
Take out a pinch of tobacco and sprinkle it into your rolling paper, avoiding the filter or roach.
-
7
Repeat Step 6 until your cigarette is about 1/2 to 2/3 full of tobacco.
-
8
Pick up your filled rolling paper by both ends and hold it steadily in each hand, with your left hand holding the filter or roach in place.
-
9
Begin rolling the side of the paper closest to you underneath the far, sticky side. Use a fluid motion beginning at the base and moving up to the end of the cigarette.
-
10
When you have a roughly cylindrical shape, tuck the edges of the close side of the paper underneath the sticky side. Don't worry about any tobacco that may have spilled out in the process.
-
11
Use your tongue to wet the glue on the rolling paper, being sure to hold the cigarette firmly.
-
12
Stick the glued edge of the paper to the joint to form a cylinder. Take care to avoid any folding or gaps.
-
13
Hold the cigarette with the open end up and place any escaped tobacco into the cylinder.
-
14
Close the open end with a twisting motion, much like you would close a bag of bread with a twist-tie.
-
15
Check the cigarette for any gaps, rips or tears, and light an end to smoke it.

The problem beginners have is how to have the tobacco not be so loose that the whole stick burns unevenly. Also, most of the tabak falls out the ends while trying to roll the stick. I say, what we're looking for is the tricks and tips on how to effectively roll one without losing tabak and rolling one too loosely. As a veteran user of the TOP filter cigarette machine, I can't roll a plain unfiltered paper-and-tobacco cigarette worth half a penny.
