How to See Cricket at Lord's

In the UK, Lord's is to cricket what Wembley is to football and it deserves its nickname of 'The Home of Cricket'. In fact, it is actually the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club although it is, in fact, owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Instructions

    • 1

Lord's plays host to a variety of different cricketing matches. As well as always being chosen as a Test Match venue whenever England are playing test match internationals in this country, it is also used for Middlesex's county championship home matches. MCC matches, one-day test internationals and some of Middlesex's 20/20 league matches. Therefore, you should visit the Lord's website to find out what matches are coming up and where you can book tickets for matches online.

    • 2

Some of the more popular fixtures, test matches in particular, sell out very quickly so it's important to check the Lord's website regularly when they're about to announce that tickets are going on sale for a particular match

    • 3

For some matches, there will be a strict limit on how many tickets you can buy so if you're planning to attend as a larger group, you should submit separate applications individually as you may even find you're disqualified from any tickets for a particular match if you make multiple applications yourself.

    • 4

Even if a match has sold out, you should keep updated with the Lord's website as tickets can often be returned and be put on resale. A ballot procedure is also available.

    • 5

For those who are cricket 'mad' and where money's of little consequence, you can apply for debentures. This year (2007), they cost £8000 and allow you access to all matches played at Lord's for the following 8 years. For paying for this additional privilege, you'll also benefit from access to the best bars and refreshments alongside other privileges and there's a dedicated phone number and e-mail address on the Lord's website if you want to find out more.

    • 6

Unlike football, you are able to buy tickets for Lord's on E-bay but, as with any other purchases on E-bay, you'll need to take the usual precautions as to the trustworthiness of the seller.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should really only buy tickets from official bone fide recognised sources, either from Lord's itself or from any of their appointed agencies.

  • As Lord's is located in St John's Wood in Middlesex, it is at the very heart of the capital's commuter belt so be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get to the ground before the match starts.

  • For a newcomer to spectator cricket, the 20/20 matches are an exciting introduction to the world of cricket as a spectator sport being fast and frantic compared to some of the other matches and, as many are often played at night under floodlights, it creates an added dimension to watching cricket.

  • Never buy from a tout, no matter how important the match. The likelihood is you'll pay far above the regular ticket price and/or worse still, your ticket may well end up being a forgery which may result in police action being taken.
