How to Insert Clip Art into a Microsoft Word Document

Enliven your Microsoft Word document by inserting clip art onto the page. Microsoft Word comes with many pre-installed pictures that you can use. Follow these steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Microsoft Word with clip art installed
  1. Step 1

    Open Microsoft Word by double-clicking the Microsoft Word program icon or by choosing Microsoft Word from the "Start" menu.

  2. Step 2

    Click the "Blank Page" icon on the "Standard" toolbar to get a new page or click "File" then "New" from the "Menu" bar.

  3. Step 3

    Place your cursor where you want the clip art to go. If you want the clip art in the center of the page, press the "Tab" button on your keyboard several times to move the cursor over.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Insert" on the "Menu" bar and choose "Picture then "Clip Art" from the list. The clip art search pane opens up on the right side of the screen.

  5. Step 5

    Type the topic you want to search for in the "Search" box at the top of the pane. For example, if you want clip art of a house, type the word house in the search pane.

  6. Step 6

    Go to "Other Search Options." Click the arrow at the end of the "Search In" pane and choose "All Collections" or "Everywhere" from the list. Click "Search." The clip art pictures will appear in the "Results" pane.

  7. Step 7

    Click on the clip art that you want to insert into the page. You can choose more than one picture by clicking each clip art photo you want to insert.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your cursor is where you want the clip art to appear.
  • Choose "All Collections" in the "Search In" box.
  • Make sure "All Media Types" is checked in the "Results Should Be" box.
