Mental health is an essential key to overall health. If your mental health is not all it can be, you can harm yourself and those you love both emotionally and physically. Therapy can give you the tools to keep mentally healthy, just as a physician gives you the tools to keep physically healthy.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that depression and many other mental illnesses can be a result of chemical imbalances in the body. If you aren't sure if you should see a therapist, visit your family physician first and explain how you are feeling. They might do some tests on you and even check your thyroid function. Thyroid problems are often misdiagnosed as depression.

  2. Step 2

Take a test online. There are many websites that offer self test questionnaires that will tell you if you need to see a therapist. Remember to answer the questions honestly; you are only fooling yourself if you don't.

  3. Step 3

Do a self check: Are you sad more than not sad? Have you been trying to do way too much? Or, have you been dragging yourself around, hardly motivated to eat? These are signs of depression, so you should consider seeing therapist.

  4. Step 4

Listen to others. If your boss or friends who really care sincerely suggest you need help, perhaps you should seek therapy. You can even do it just to prove them wrong.

  5. Step 5

Act on your intuition. You know yourself deep inside. Chances are you wouldn't be reading this article if you didn't feel you should seek therapy. Remember that mental health is part of good health and understanding your own personal needs is part of taking care of yourself. If you had a toothache you would go to the dentist, wouldn't you?

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't allow the judgment of others to affect your decision to seek therapy.
  • If you have any thoughts of suicide or of harming others, get help immediately.
