Nasal irrigation or flushing the sinuses is a useful technique for a runny or clogged nose and stuffy head. Whether you are suffering from a cold, allergies or sinus infection, a saline irrigation is easy, safe and offers quick relief. Here is how to flush the sinuses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nasal bulb syringe
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 8 oz. warm tap water or distilled water
  • Tissues
  1. Step 1

Mix the nasal irrigation solution using 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. baking soda and 8 oz. warm tap water or distilled water. It is a good idea to boil the water and let it cool to a safe, warm temperature then add the salt and baking soda.

  2. Step 2

Use between 8 and 16 ounces of solution in each nostril once or twice a day, or follow your physician's recommendations.

  3. Step 3

Lean over the sink and turn your head so the left nostril is downward.

  4. Step 4

Squirt the solution slowly into your right nostril using a nasal bulb syringe. The water will drain from the left nostril into the sink. Use enough pressure to assure the solution flows from the right nostril into the left nostril and runs out.

  5. Step 5

Blow your nose gently and repeat the same irrigation process for the left nostril.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are products that can be purchased that contain saline packets and a specially designed plastic bottle and lid to flush the sinuses. Ask your local pharmacist about nasal irrigation kits.
  • Prepare fresh solution daily and clean the bulb syringe or the sinus rinse bottle and lid after each use.
  • Only use enough pressure to move the solution through one nostril and out the other side. This should not cause major discomfort.
