There are those PC users who still have the same desktop background as when they bought their computer years ago. Sometimes they get background boredom and would like to change the scene to a picture of their child sitting in flowers, a beautiful sunset or a twisting F5 tornado eating up a city. Whatever background Windows desktop you want, the process to setting up the background is very easy. Read on to find out more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get to the Windows XP desktop. The desktop background is the picture that has all the icons in it. When you turn on the computer this is the screen you see after logging in.

  2. Step 2

Right click on the desktop in a place that there is not an icon. A side window will pop-up. Click the bottom option "Properties" and a Display Properties window will appear with uniquely labeled tabs at the top.

  3. Step 3

Pick the "Desktop" tab. In the middle of the screen under Background there will be several files to choose from. Click on the file name of the background you want. If you don't know the name of the file you want, click each file name and a sample picture will appear in the top of the window.

  4. Step 4

Click the down arrow next to the Stretch, Tile or Center option. Choose each one and view the sample picture above to see which view suits you best. Pick a color for the background of the picture by clicking the down arrow button under the "Color" option.

  5. Step 5

Select "Apply" and then "OK" if the background suits your mood. If co-workers walk by and voice opposition, disgust or repulsion, you may want to change the background as not to offend anyone else.

  6. Step 6

Choose a picture that you have downloaded on to your machine from either the Internet, camera or a design that you have created. Right click it and select the option "Set as Desktop Background." This is a nice way to think of family while at work.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can change the Windows XP background as often as your mood desires, just remember to make it easy on the eyes.
  • Be sure that your background is appropriate for the work environment.
