Leave town, get away from the office and avoid the Internet without fear of ignoring your email buddies. Generate an automatic email to respond to those who send mail to your Gmail account. Enable the Gmail vacation responder and be assured that all who email you, or only those who you choose, will know you have temporarily disconnected from the web.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign into your Gmail account by entering your user name and password. Click the "Settings" link on the upper right portion of your Gmail window. Gmail then directs you to the "General settings" tab.

  2. Step 2

Scroll down to the "Vacation responder" section of the "General settings" tab.

  3. Step 3

Select the "Vacation responder on" button.

  4. Step 4

Enter a subject in the "Subject" field. Type in what you want the title of your automatic vacation response email to be.

  5. Step 5

Enter the body of the email in the "Message" field. Include whatever you want to divulge to those sending you email while you are away. Tell them where you are, when you may be returning and who they should contact in the case of an emergency.

  6. Step 6

Decide if you want the automatic vacation response sent to everyone who emails you, or only to those listed on your contact list. If you prefer that the message be sent only to those on your contact list, check the appropriate box below the "Message" field.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Save changes" button before returning to your Gmail account, or before logging off.

Tips & Warnings
  • A banner at the top of your Gmail account reminds you the automatic vacation responder is activated. It stays there until you deactivate the responder.
  • Remember to select the "Save changes" button at the bottom of the screen to start your vacation responder. If you don't, the automatic vacation response will not be activated.
  • Do not include personal information in your automatic vacation response unless you want all of those who email you to have access to the information.
