Windows XP is a very powerful operating system, and is the standard for most businesses. That doesn't mean it's without its flaws. There are times when things go wrong, software conflicts with other software or graphics cards cause problems for other programs. One of the most effective ways to address problems in Windows XP is to start your system in safe mode.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP
  • Computer

Start Windows XP in Safe Mode Using the System Configuration Utility

  1. Step 1

Allow Windows XP to start normally and wait for it to finish loading. This can take from 30 seconds to 3 minutes or more, depending on how many programs you have set to run when you start the computer.

  2. Step 2

Close any open programs, such as Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word. Programs running in the foreground may interrupt the process or cause problems during the reboot.

  3. Step 3

Click the Start button or press the "Windows Start Menu" key if your keyboard has one. This will bring up the Start Menu.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Run."

  5. Step 5

Type "MSCONFIG" in the text field and press "Enter" or click "OK." This is the command that starts the system configuration utility.

  6. Step 6

Click the "BOOT.INI" tab along the menu bar.

  7. Step 7

Click on the checkbox next to the "/SAFEBOOT" option in the window and click "OK."

  8. Step 8

Restart your computer once the system prompts you to do so.

  9. Step 9

Return the computer to normal mode. Be sure to uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" to disable safe mode.

  10. Start Windows XP in Safe Mode Using the F8 Key

  11. Step 1

    Turn on your computer.

  12. Step 2

Wait until the initial loading screen appears.

  13. Step 3

Begin tapping the "F8" key. Avoid tapping too soon or you may cause a keyboard error that will require a further restart.

  14. Step 4

Select the safe mode option once your system's "Windows Advanced Options" menu appears.

  15. Step 5

Save and close the menu and Windows XP will restart in safe mode.

  16. Step 6

Revert from safe mode using the same technique.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's always a good idea to start Windows XP in safe mode if you're installing a new piece of hardware. This gives you the chance to install the drivers required for the hardware while reducing the risk of conflicts during installation.
  • Avoid turning off your computer without properly shutting it down, even if you plan on putting it into safe mode. Shutting a computer down, without cycling Windows XP through the shutdown mode, can cause problems for your system memory. It can also corrupt files within the operating system.
