How to Buy a Rat Rod

Rat rods are usually low-budget vehicles custom built by the owner. Unlike expensive show cars with flashy exteriors, the rat rod often looks rough and unfinished. When you're shopping for this type of vehicle, you will undoubtedly see a lot of primer and vintage parts. But don't let appearances fool you; this type of vehicle is not for show--it's meant to be driven. If this sounds like something for you, follow these steps to purchase one of your own.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide what you want. Do you want a rat rod car or a rat rod truck? Are you looking for a vehicle made with parts from any specific makes or models? What type of engine do you want? The interiors of rat rods and their comfort level vary a great deal--what are your preferences?
Step2
Do some research. Find out if there are any rat rod clubs or events in your area. If so, be sure to go and make some contacts. Talk to people who enjoy rebuilding and working on vehicles; word of mouth is often a great way to find out what's available.
Step3
Search the internet. Many online classified and auction websites have a variety of custom-built vehicles for sale, including rat rods. Browse the ads and message boards to try and find something you would like to own.
Step4
Narrow your options down to two or three vehicles and start contacting the owners for more information.
Step5
Ask a lot of questions. Did the owner build the car? Where did the owner find all the different rat rod parts and accessories? How often was the car driven and how did it perform?
Step6
Buy the rat rod you like best and enjoy!
