As the world of comic books becomes increasingly literate and involved, many people are developing a taste for comics and graphic novels. There is even an expanding industry based on the buying and selling of comics. But if you prefer reading to trading, you might decide you would like to start a collection for fun, not profit. Follow these steps to learn how to go about it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mylar Sleeves
  • Cardboard Comic Backings
  • Cellophane Tape (Optional)
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your tastes. Think about what you enjoy and what are you looking for in a comic. Then decide if you prefer things like flashy artwork, high-octane action or a cerebral plot. Also know what you dislike in a comic.

  2. Step 2

Get recommendations from others, especially from clerks at your local comic shop. Tell them what you are looking for in general. They can help you find specific comics to fit your wants.

  3. Step 3

Look through the comics others have recommended and decide what you like and want to try.

  4. Step 4

Choose your comics and purchase them. This is a good time to also purchase bags and boards to preserve your comic collection.

  5. Step 5

Prepare to preserve your comics with the plastic sleeves and cardboard backings. Slide the boards into the sleeves with the white side facing the back flap--not where you'll be folding down and securing it.

  6. Step 6

Read your comics, then place them into the bags. Seal the flap with a bit of tape on the back, making sure not to tape the comic.

  7. Step 7

Repeat the process as often as you like and watch your collection grow as you discover which comics you like most.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the Mylar sleeves and the boards you buy are the right size for your comics.
  • Use acid-free comic boards if you think you will be storing your comics long-term (for five years or more).
