No one can be fully prepared for a natural disaster. With hurricanes, however, you may know at least a few days in advance if one is headed in your direction. As you pack up your family and belongings to move to a safer area, be sure to consider what will happen to your pets. Make a hurricane kit for pets before leaving home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • List of Pet-Friendly Hotels
  • Medication
  • Toys and Treats
  • Leash or Collar
  • Crates
  • Water
  • Rabies Tag
  • First-Aid Kit
  • Recent Photograph of Your Pet
  • Medical Records
  1. Step 1

Search for pet-friendly hotels before leaving home. Make a list of hotels and their phone numbers so you can make arrangements. Most disaster shelters will not allow pets inside so you will need alternate places to stay.

  2. Step 2

Gather your pets' health information and put it in a safe place in your car. You may need shot records, a recent photograph and any identification.

  3. Step 3

Put together a small first-aid kit for your pets. Include any special medication that your pets may need. Don't forget heart worm and flea medicine.

  4. Step 4

Pack a two-week supply of food for your pets. You will also need to bring clean water, perhaps in gallon jugs, for your pets.

  5. Step 5

Take along the basic things you need everyday for your pets such as leashes or collars, favorite toys, treats and beds.

  6. Step 6

Bring crates for your pets. Also, if you must stay in a shelter you have a better chance of bringing your pets along if they are in crates rather than loose on a leash.
