Step 1
Begin by looking for a local Dojung, or school, of Hapkido. Unless a friend has already recommended a school of Hapkido, try the usual sources, such as a telephone directory and newspaper advertisements.
-
Step 2
Check with a nearby YMCA, continuing education or parks and recreation newsletters for notices of Hapkido classes. If you live near a college or university, contact the activity center there to see whether classes in Hapkido are available.
-
Step 3
Find the martial arts section of a local bookstore and search for books about Hapkido. Although book learning is not the ideal way to learn a martial art, the illustrations and the text can help you get a good start.
-
Step 4
Become familiar with the World Hapkido Association website, worldhapkido.com, which is written in English. This excellent site gives tips on understanding the basic philosophy of Hapkido as well as the actual techniques. A monthly newsletter announces speakers, demonstrations and other useful events related to Hapkido.
-
Step 5
Watch the World Hapkido Association website for notices of online classes. These are offered from time to time, and they are especially useful for long-distance learners. Students' success at performing the different techniques are videotaped so that the master can assess their learning and make suggestions for improvement.
