How to File a Builder's Risk Insurance Claim

A builder's risk insurance policy covers buildings under construction. Many of the insurance carriers offer a range of policies in this category. Once the unthinkable happens, you will need to file a claim. Follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read your policy to determine whether the problem is covered. Study the "coverages" and "exclusions" sections.

  2. Step 2

Check out the insurance company's website. Many insurance companies have a button or link that will lead you through the claims filing process. If they don't have the information online there will be a phone number to call for more assistance.

  3. Step 3

Notify your insurer directly or call the agent for the insurer. State laws require insurance companies to respond within a certain amount of time, so getting your claim in starts the process. Describe the events that have taken place and keep records of your contact with the insurance company.

  4. Step 4

Take pictures of the damage or problem. Make a file of your claim and keep the photos. Take several pictures in case the insurance company wants originals.

  5. Step 5

Let the insurance representative know the details when he arrives on site. A file has been established for you at the insurance company, but make sure the representative has all the details. He will want to walk around and examine any damage. Go with him and explain what happened.

  6. Step 6

Keep good records. Insurance companies and attorneys will want documentation of the event. File everything a safe location. Give copies to your attorney.
