Just because you and your spouse have a good relationship does not mean that you will automatically have a good relationship with your in-laws. Some relationships just will not work unless you really make an effort to improve them. Here are some helpful steps to improve the relationship with your in-laws.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Realize that you cannot change your in-laws' behavior. You can only change your reaction to their behavior. Accept them as they are because only they can change themselves.
Step2
Let your spouse discuss any difficult subjects with his or her own family. They are in charge of managing that relationship. This includes things like holiday plans and how to raise your children.
Step3
Understand that you might have in-law issues because you may feel like you are betraying your own parents by being close to your in-laws. You are not doing anybody wrong by loving both families. It can only improve your relationship with your spouse.
Step4
Stay out of fights between your spouse and his or her family. This problem is between them and can make the relationship worse between you and your in-laws if you choose sides.
Step5
Make an effort to get to know your in-laws better. Invite them to lunch or make a phone call just to catch up. It may seem awkward at first but it will get easier.
Step6
Make your in-laws feel welcome in your home. They may feel like an outsider if they get the feeling that you do not want them around. This may cause them to treat you indifferently.
