    Instructions

      • 1

Create an email address specifically for public use that is separate from your personal email. The longer it is, the better. Spammers attack shorter email addresses first.

      • 2

Do not post your email address in public spaces such as websites and newsgroups. If you must do so, use your public email address for this purpose and write the address as "name at domain dot com" instead of "name@domain.com."

      • 3

Exercise caution when filling out online forms. Use your public email address and view the privacy policy on the website before proceeding. The privacy policy tells you how the company plans to use the information you are submitting.

      • 4

Use a spam filter. Most email programs and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer spam filters at little or no cost. The spam filter will help you manage the spam you do receive by moving it to a separate folder and marking it as illegitimate email, therefore blocking future emails from the spammer.

Install a firewall for your computer network. This will help prevent spammers from hacking or planting worms on your computer.

      • 6

Do not respond to emails that ask you to verify account information. Institutions you already deal with such as your bank or your credit card company already have your information. They would not send emails asking for such confirmations. These emails come from spammers who are trying to pose as legitimate companies.

Safeguard all your login information. Never share your usernames and passwords with anyone else.
