Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- OSHA-approved gas can
- Rope, bungee cord or other tie-downs
Step1
Get a new, OSHA-approved gas can. These gas cans come with safety features that prevent spills and the escape of dangerous fumes. Your community may offer to give you a new gas can in exchange for your old one.
Step2
Fill gas cans on the ground away from your vehicle. Contact with the ground prevents the buildup of static electricity, which can cause a fire.
Step3
Keep the fueling nozzle in contact with the gas can at all times. This also prevents static from building.
Step4
Keep your hand on the nozzle. Don’t use the latch-open device to fill a gas can.
Step5
Tie cans in place when transporting so they don’t fall over and spill gasoline inside your vehicle.
