With gasoline prices rising, many people have considered buying gasoline at a discount to use at a later time. Whatever the reason for storing gasoline, care must be taken to safely transport the fuel from the point of purchase to the home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • OSHA-approved gas can
  • Rope, bungee cord or other tie-downs
  1. Step 1

Get a new, OSHA-approved gas can. These gas cans come with safety features that prevent spills and the escape of dangerous fumes. Your community may offer to give you a new gas can in exchange for your old one.

  2. Step 2

Fill gas cans on the ground away from your vehicle. Contact with the ground prevents the buildup of static electricity, which can cause a fire.

  3. Step 3

Keep the fueling nozzle in contact with the gas can at all times. This also prevents static from building.

  4. Step 4

Keep your hand on the nozzle. Don’t use the latch-open device to fill a gas can.

  5. Step 5

Tie cans in place when transporting so they don’t fall over and spill gasoline inside your vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use gasoline soon after buying it. Gasoline can go stale in just a few days if stored in less than optimal conditions. Although fuel stabilizers can help, it’s best not to store gasoline for long periods.
  • Never smoke while filling gas cans.
