Instructions
  1. Step 1

Earn a bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field. While some entry level jobs do not require it, you will need a college degree to advance.

  2. Step 2

Learn about the different specialties within human resources. Decide which one interests you.

  3. Step 3

Ensure you have the proper skills needed for your job. Someone working in labor relations needs to understand labor law, while math skills are helpful in compensation and effective communication skills are vital for recruiting.

  4. Step 4

Apply to and interview for the job that you would like. Remember that hiring falls under HR so take extra care in checking your resume and preparing for your interview. Attention to detail is required.

  5. Step 5

Stay current on the latest advances in your field. If you work in compensation, know the trends on paying for performance and how your company’s compensation packages stand up to national averages.

  6. Step 6

Get certified as a Professional in Human Resources. Although not required, the certification provides you with the knowledge necessary to fulfill your role and makes you more competitive for advancement.

  7. Step 7

Take on increasing levels of responsibility within your chosen field. Specialize in one area or broaden your expertise on the role human resource management can play within the company.

Tips & Warnings
  • Continuing education is very important whether it is working on an advanced degree, Professional or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification or just staying current on the latest legislations impacting employees.
