Many people think customer service is lacking. This may be a result of the diminishing of manners in general. Follow these steps to get better customer service in the future.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Be nice and friendly. Customer service representatives sometimes have nothing to do with the cause of the problem and very much want to be helpful. Be considerate of their time and remember manners, and it will usually pay off.
Step2
Be clear in communicating what the need is. If service is lacking, something is not working right or something is broken, say exactly that and have examples. Customer service reps probably encounter a wide variety of requests throughout the day and cannot read minds.
Step3
Keep control of emotions. Most reps do not deserve insults and cursing. Most will shut down and be unwilling to help if treated disrespectfully.
Step4
Be persistent. Most customer service jobs are fast-paced and busy. Expect to maybe get brushed aside or passed on to another department. Be nice but persistent, and let them know that you mean business.
Step5
Be realistic about what is deserved. Don’t make outrageous demands. Try to be informed about the product or service that is being offered. Be willing to be helped.
Step6
Ask for a supervisor. This will usually get the job done. Supervisors have more leniency with what they can do for the customer. They also have more training in how to handle the situations. Once again, be nice, but feel free to ask for a supervisor. If need be, contact the manager beyond that.
Step7
Choose to use services and goods at places specializing in good service. This usually translates into paying higher prices, but the quality of service and products will be better. Discount stores with cheaper prices pay less for employees and goods.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan to take care of issues when the most time is available. Sometimes help takes time, which is usually not the fault of the customer service rep. It does not help to be rushed.
