Many people think of classical music as an acquired taste. We "acquire" tastes for all kinds of music without realizing it, such as country, pop, reggae and jazz. But most people consider classical music difficult to appreciate. It is really quite a diverse field of music and there is a wide variety of classical styles.

      Buy a classical CD with a compilation of different composers. You may want to buy several, because there are collections of religious music, relaxing music, concertos and many other styles. To get a true sampling, you will most likely need to listen to several types of compilations.

      Let the music play as background music during your day. After a while, certain melodies will become recognizable. As you listen, you start to get a feeling for the different styles, such as classical, romantic and baroque.

      Pay attention to which composers you enjoy the most. You might branch out and try more of their works, or other artists that composed music during the same era.

      Play a classical music station at home or at work. Familiarity will breed likes and dislikes for certain styles.

      Go to live symphonic performances if possible. It greatly enhances your understanding of the music and your appreciation of the instrumental styles. Often the conductor will explain the music or the composer's intentions between pieces.

      Take your time. Consider your learning a work in progress. It should be an enjoyable past-time so let the music become familiar in a slow process.
