Love the portability of hand sanitizer but don't love the price? Previously you may have thought that only overpriced versions were available at specialty stores. This simple recipe has only a few ingredients and takes just minutes to throw together. And, it is great having the satisfaction of making something yourself!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
  • 1/4 cup of 99% rubbing alchohol
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Air tight container or dispenser
  1. Step 1

    Mix ingredients together.

  2. Step 2

Put a few drops of essential oil in your favorite scent to make it smell good.

  3. Step 3

Pour into a pump-style or squeeze bottle.

  4. Step 4

Use a nickel sized dollop and rub hands together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a small bottle in kid's lunch box, or diaper bag for times when no sink is available.
  • If you find some nice glass jars and add your own label, you can give home made sanitizers as gifts to family and friends!
  • Add food coloring for a decorative touch. Display in a pretty dispenser in kitchen or bathroom.
  • Use sparingly. Homemade versions don't dissolve into your hands quite as quickly as the commercial hand sanitizers.

on 4/30/2009 To be effective, hand sanitizers need to contain at least 60% alcohol. The recipe you give is less than 33%... Try changing the ratio to 1/4 cup Aloe Vera or glycerin (the moisturizer used in Purell) to at 3/4 cup 99% alcohol. This will give you a 74% blend.
