When you enter a highway on the entrance ramp, be careful and alert to all traffic so you will merge safely with the highway traffic. Here are some tips on how to safely enter a highway.

1. Check the flow of traffic.

2. Develop a plan based on the flow of traffic after you check it. Gaging how much traffic is on the highway and how fast the traffic is flowing will assist you in developing a plan for entering the highway.

3. Turn on proper signals showing the other drivers you intend to enter the highway.

4. Enter the acceleration lane to the far right.

5. Adjust your speed to the flow of the traffic on the highway.

6. Yield to vehicles already on the highway.

7. Merge into traffic when it is safe to do so but before the acceleration lane ends.

Tips & Warnings

• Never stop on the acceleration lane or try to enter the highway extremely below the speed limit. This can cause the flow of the traffic on the highway to come to an unexpected slow down which could result in an accident.
