Oklahoma allows teenagers to take a driver education course at 15 years old; however, teenagers are not allowed to apply for a learner permit or driver permit until 15 and a half. If teenagers do not take a driver education course, you cannot apply for a driver permit until age 16. Many schools across Oklahoma offer driver education classes during the summer or after school. Most schools charge a small fee for these classes. Driver education courses are highly encouraged in Oklahoma. Here are some guidelines to help you understand the complicated process for teenagers to get an Oklahoma driver permit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Oklahoma Driver's Manual
  • Documentation school enrollment
  • Documentation criterion-referenced reading test passed on an 8th grade level
  • Completion of driver education course
  • Social Security Number
  • Proper identification

Step1
Complete driver education course by age 15 and a half or be at least 16 years old without it. The driver education course includes classroom and practical training.
Step2
Study the Oklahoma Driver Manual from front to back. All questions for the written test are taken from this manual.
Step3
Apply for the learner permit, sometimes referred to as driver permit, at the nearest Driver License Office. The application must be made in person and requires a parent's signature on the application if under the age of 18.
Step4
Bring proper documentation. These documents include the application for learner permit and proof of identity including social security number. Under the age of 18 requires additional documentation such as verification of enrollment and attendance in school and documentation you have passed a reading proficiency test on the eight-grade level.
Step5
Pass the vision test. Before the written exam is given for the learner permit, a quick vision test is administered.
Step6
Take the test. You are not required to pay any fees until after you have passed and completed all the requirements.
Step7
Pass the written test. A score of 70 percent or better is considered passing. You are given 20 multiple-choice questions.
Step8
Meet all the requirements for a learner permit. The examiner will give you a form stating the type of license you are allowed to have, the restrictions that apply to you, and the fee.
Step9
Take the form you received from the examiner to the local tag agency. Your picture will be taken, fees collected, then you will be issued an Oklahoma learner permit or driver permit.

Tips & Warnings

  • You have two weeks after passing the written test and receiving the form from the examiner to take it to the tag agent to get your learner permit. If you fail to do this within two weeks, you will have to re-apply and re-test.
  • When the parents signs the application for the learner permit, the parent is taking financial and legal responsibility for the person receiving the permit. If the minor violates the law, damage property, or cause personal injury to others, the parent is responsible.
  • Every attempt you make to pass the written test will cost you $4.
  • If you fail the written test, by law you must wait at least one day before retesting.
