How to Learn Capoeira
Capoeira is a unique Afro-Brazilian sport which combines elements of dance, acrobatics and martial arts into one fluid, graceful game. First practiced by African slaves in colonial Brazil, this game was outlawed until the 1930s. Since its legalization it has become a popular game played not only in Brazil, but all over the world. It is a difficult game to master, but if you study it you will not only learn physical agility, you will also learn about Brazilian music, philosophy, history and even some Portuguese.

1
Research the Web for Capoeira schools in your area. Most major US and European cities have at least one Capoeira school. Many university campuses also offer Capoeira classes, either during regular school hours or after hours as a club.
-
2
Choose the school where you want to study. Like other more traditional martial arts, Capoeira also has different styles and each mestre (teacher) will have a preference, so find out which style the school offers and which you would most like to learn.
-
-
3
Go visit the school and observe a class before you actually sign up to make sure it is what you are looking for. Talk to the mestre and don't be afraid to ask questions.
-
4
Prepare yourself physically. If you are in good shape, then you will be able to begin classes right away. If you are not very physically fit you may want to consider starting a good exercise routine before taking Capoeira. At any rate you will want to stretch your muscles and work on your flexibility as you begin your study of the Capoeira moves.
-
5
Prepare yourself mentally and intellectually. Capoeira isn't just about physical prowess it is also about culture. In order to really understand the game you should learn about its rich past beforehand and of course, continue reading about it after you start your classes.
-
6
Sign up for the class you have chosen and have fun.
-
7
Study the history of the game, read the philosophy of the mestres who practice your style, learn the lyrics to songs, listen to the music and study the game's unique terminology (which requires a Portuguese dictionary). All of this is part of learning Capoeira.
