How to Define Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is defined as the growth of malignant cells which develop into masses called tumors within the breasts. Most often these tumors form in the milk ducts, but they can also form in the milk-producing glands. Both men and women are susceptible to breast cancer. It's important to learn as much as you can about treatments and support should you or a loved one be diagnosed with the disease.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Know that any type of cancer occurs when abnormal cells replicate until they form a mass called a tumor.
Step2
Be aware that these cancerous cells can stay localized within a relatively contained area or can spread throughout the body.
Step3
Understand that tumors can occur in the breast without attendant pain, and often the patient may not know that she has breast cancer. This is why regular screening is so important.
Step4
Know that high-risk groups include women over the age of 40 and people with a family history of cancer. Also, cancer in other parts of the body can increase the risk of breast cancer.
Step5
Realize that since cancer can be so different in different people, it can be difficult to define it absolutely. Some sufferers may have small, localized tumors. Others may find that the cancer has spread, and so they will define the disease as a 'whole body' affliction.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your doctor how often you should be checked for breast cancer. If you have been diagnosed with the illness, it's vital that you be regularly checked for recurrence.
  • The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) offers an online informational document on the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to employees suffering from cancer (see Resources below).
  • If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, consider preparing yourself for the stress and anxiety of a cancer diagnosis by connecting with your hospital's breast cancer support group. The American Cancer Society can also connect you to a group (see Resources below).
