How to FTP in Konqueror

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a handy tool for exchanging files online. Most computer systems support FTP operations. When you use FTP, you can upload files from another computer or even make adjustments and additions to files on another computer from your own home location. However, in order to protect the integrity of their files and the privacy of their users, most Web sites that use FTP require a user name and password in order to access the materials on the site. While logging on to such sites is usually not difficult if you have the correct credentials, the log-in process can sometimes involve an extra step if you are using Konqueror as your Web browser.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your computer and open Konqueror.

    • 2

Go to the Web site you would like to log onto by typing its URL into Konqueror's browsing field.

    • 3

Type 'ftp://' into the browsing field, followed by your user name, the @ symbol and the host's name, then hit the 'Enter' button on your keyboard.

    • 4

Keep your password handy. At this point, Konqueror will open up a box for you to use to enter your password. Type your password in this box and hit 'Enter' on the keyboard. You will now be logged in to your selected FTP site and can begin using FTP operations right away.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must have a Unix-based operating system to use Konqueror.

  • Download Konqueror from the Konqueror home page (see Resources below).

  • If you have additional questions or issues regarding how to use FTP in Konqueror, pay a visit to Konqueror's FAQs page (see Resources below).

  • These steps were written using Konqueror 3.5.2. If you are using a different version, some or all steps might differ.

  • Think twice about accepting cookies from outside Web sites. Cookies can be a great convenience online, allowing certain sites to automatically remember your log-in information or shopping preferences, for example. However, cookies can also be used by unknown Web sites to spy on you for marketing purposes or even nefarious reasons. It is never a good idea to allow cookies from a site you do not know, and that is why Konqueror does not permit such cookies to be stored on your computer. If you really want outside cookies to be permitted, you must specifically program Konqueror to allow this.
