JavaScript is an essential bit of programming that allows you to read the text in Web sites you visit online. In fact, you will need to enable JavaScript in your Web browser to read almost any Web site. JavaScript and Web programming go hand in hand. While JavaScript is usually enabled automatically in every Web browser, this is not always the case. Also, JavaScript can sometimes become accidentally disabled through no fault of your own. If you find you need to enable JavaScript again in Internet Explorer, it is not hard to do and requires just a few easy steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Working hook-up to the Internet
  • Internet Explorer Version 7

Set Internet Explorer to Read JavaScript

Step1
Access Internet Explorer by opening it up on your computer. If it isn't already installed, visit the Microsoft Web site to download the latest version (see Resources below).
Step2
Go to 'Tools' on the task bar and click on it.
Step3
Select the 'Internet Options' heading.
Step4
Locate the tab labeled 'Advanced' and click on it.
Step5
Scroll through the list of settings until you see the 'Java' category.
Step6
Use your mouse to place a check in the box beside the only setting option under 'Java.' This setting option is 'Use JRE 1.5.0_05.'
Step7
Click 'OK.'
Step8
Re-start your computer. Your computer must be re-started in order for the change you just made to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have additional questions regarding how to enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer head over to the Internet Explorer FAQs page (see Resources below).
  • Internet Explorer 7 will run on computers using Windows XP, Vista or Server 2003 with a 233MHz processor or higher.
  • Turning JavaScript off before visiting sites that have nagging features, such as pop-ups, can help save memory on your computer and accelerate your surfing. On the other hand, the lack of JavaScript means that you won't have access to many visual features of the site.
  • You can further strengthen Internet Explorer's protective measures by increasing the security settings in its built-in firewall and by installing your own virus elimination software.
  • Enabling JavaScript, as described by this guide, is done using Internet Explorer version 7. If you are running a prior version, you may need to upgrade your browser.

on 4/14/2008 What should I do if they are already "enabled" & I'm still getting an error message that Javascript is not enabled ( or is disabled)?
