Trepanation is a branch of alternative medicine that involves drilling a hole through the skull in order to balance out blood flow to the brain. It is most commonly used as an emergency procedure to treat hematomas of the head. However, some believe that trepanation can also be useful to sufferers of migraine headaches and can in fact cure a patient's migraines permanently.

    Use Trepanation to Treat Migraines

  1. Step 1

Know what causes migraines. It is believed that migraine headaches are caused by over-excitation of nerve cells in the brain, combined with blood vessel abnormalities that cause dilation and inflammation.

  2. Step 2

Understand how trepanation works and how it can be used to cure migraines. Trepanation is thought by some to increase blood circulation in the brain. Increased circulation would then help eliminate dilation of blood vessels and reduce the inflammation that causes migraine pain.

  3. Step 3

Discuss the possibility of trepanation with your doctor. Find out all the options for curing or reducing migraines and decide together whether or not trepanation is the right course of action for you.

  4. Step 4

Schedule an appointment with your doctor to have your trepanation surgery performed. Be sure it is performed at an accredited medical facility, properly equipped to perform the procedure as safely and effectively as possible.

  5. Step 5

Schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to check on your recovery and make sure you are getting through the surgery without problems or complications.

  6. Step 6

Learn more about the possible uses of trepanation, as well as its history and philosophy, by reading 'Trepanation' by Robert Arnott (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Trepanation can be an expensive procedure.
  • Trepanation has been used to cure migraines since around 7,000 B.C. Back then, a stone chisel was hammered through the skull to relieve pain. Only about half the patients survived the procedure.
  • Trepanation should only be performed by and at the advice of a licensed medical doctor. Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
  • Trepanation carries a high risk of infection and brain damage. If you experience signs of infection or any type of head injury, see a doctor immediately.
  • If you continue to experience migraines after undergoing trepanation surgery, or if migraines worsen, consult your doctor.
  • If you experience a subdural or epidural hematoma (the breaking of a blood vessel in the head) go to the emergency room.
