Choose Headphones For Podcasting

Headphones are important when you're recording a podcast because you need to monitor your voice, but you don't want to the microphone to pick up the sound coming from your speakers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • money
  1. Step 1

Ideally, you want your headphones to isolate the sound that you are recording from everything else that could be a distraction. Because of this, headphones that cover your ears may be a solid investment. Earbuds would be cheaper though. Step 1: Think about your budget.

  2. Step 2

Think about your own comfort preferences. Do you prefer snug fits or full-size padding. Do you value lightweight and unobtrusive? Or do you value sound quality or acoustic isolation?

  3. Step 3

Think about noise cancellation options. Usually these are associated with the big headphones that cover your ears. With this option, you can reduce the low frequency background sounds just with a flip of a switch. The dialogue sounds crisper and cleaner.

  4. Step 4

Another option that may or may not be relevant is whether you want to go wireless. Likely, when you are podcasting, you won't be moving around. Plus, the range of the wireless headphones may be limited anyway. But that is always an option for people who prefer wireless for convenience reasons. More freedom to wander.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do your research. Ask around for opinions. Good headphones can be a great investment, outside of your podcasting needs.
  • Another option is to buy a headset, since the mic and headphones are combined.
