How to Search For Photos On Flickr

Whether you are just looking for a laugh or you want to find your friend's photos, Flickr can be very useful. Paging through images from all over the world is interesting, but it can also be a way to expose yourself to other cultures and lifestyles. Whether you are searching for family photos or photos of a specific subject, Flickr's user-friendly guide can help you tremendously.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Digital camera

    Sign Into Flickr

  1. Step 1

    Visit the Flickr Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click the "Sign Up" button to create a new account.

  3. Step 3

    Use your Yahoo ID and password to create your account with Flickr.

  4. Step 4

    For existing users, click the "Sign In" link and provide your Yahoo email address and password.

  5. Begin Your Search

  6. Step 1

    Click the "Search" link to begin looking for photos.

  7. Step 2

    Choose a category from the drop-down box. You can search through anyone's photos on Flickr, as well as anyone who has been added to your contact list, your own photos, and your favorite photos.

  8. Step 3

    Type the keywords that correspond to your search.

  9. Step 4

    Select between searching via the photographs' full descriptions or Flickr tags.

  10. Step 5

    Click on the "Search" button to begin your search.

    Click on the "Search" button to reach the search page.

    Click on the "Advanced Search" link.

    Search for an exact phrase within Flickr descriptions or text by choosing a search category from the drop-down box. In the field marked "None Of These Words," type specific keywords that you would exclude from the search. Click the "Search" button after selecting these options.

  15. Step 4

    Search by date by selecting either "Photos Taken" or "Photos Posted" in the drop-down box. Specify the dates in MM/DD/YYYY format and then click the "Search" button for your results.

  16. Step 5

    Search through photographs with a Creative Common License. Check your choice and click the "Search" button.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are signing into Flickr for the first time, you will need to create a password. Be sure that it's one that you remember and one that uses both letters and numbers.
  • If you forget your password when signing into Flickr, click on the "Forget Your ID or Password" link to be reminded.
  • If you search for photos with a general set of keywords, you may get a large number of results. Try a more specific search if you are overwhelmed by the results.
  • If you need extra information on searching for photos, click on the "Help" link on Flickr (see Resources below).
  • Search Flikr's forums to get more information on sharing photos from questions and answers written by real Flickr users.
  • Use caution when creating your Flickr password. Create a safe combination of letters and numbers and keep it private.
