Step 1
Consider the role of the best man. Your best man is someone who will hold the rings, be a signing witness to your vows and who will toast your bride at the reception.
-
Step 2
Consider the popular choices for best man: your brother, your fiance's brother or a close friend.
-
Step 3
Think about what you want in your best man and talk it over with your fiance.
-
Step 4
Keep in mind that it is your wedding and, though a friend might be hurt at first by not being chosen, your friends and family will understand and respect your choices.
-
Step 5
Narrow down your options based on the characteristics that you are looking for in your best man.
-
Step 6
Choose the person whom you believe will best be there for you–—both at your wedding, the reception and while you are planning the wedding.

on 1/27/2008 Picking a best man surely can be a hard decision, but unless there are serious problems in your family (like convicted felons, liars, cheats, etc.), first priority should be given to choosing someone in your family. If you have a normal family, those are the people who will still be there for your silver and golden anniversaries. Your best bud from high school or college, or the guy you hang out at the bar or gym or who is a coworker might not be there in your life even a few years down the road. Are you and your wife going to want to be reminded everytime you look at your wedding photos that your wedding party choices (and especially the best man and maid of honor) really weren't the best choices? Again, if your family is at least somewhat normal, your brother already has ties to you and those ties will only grow stronger over the years.
