Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Information relating to prior marriages
- Identification
- Cash
Step1
Determine your eligibility for marriage. If you've had a prior marriage, you will need documentation that it was ended by divorce, death, or other legal means. If you are under 18, you will need parental consent--unless you are a pregnant teen, in which case the court can grant you the right to marry. Kentucky does not perform same-sex marriages or cousin marriages.
Step2
Gather your documentation. You will need a state-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license. You should also bring (although you may not be required to present it) your Social Security card and your birth certificate. Bring any documentation related to a prior marriage.
Step3
Go to the County Clerk in your area. Find the location of this clerk by checking either the phone book or looking on your town’s Web site.
Step4
Present the documents and pay the marriage license fee. This fee is usually about $35, although it may vary from county to county.
Step5
Get married within 30 days. This is what it is all about. Your Kentucky marriage license is only valid for 30 days after it is granted. Unlike many other states, Kentucky has no waiting period before you can get married.
