Home to the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain, this tiny diamond in the rough of New England can be a lovely place to get married. The sweetness of its genuine maple syrup coupled with the explosive extravagance of the colors of its foliage makes Vermont attractive to many engaged couples. Follow these steps to get married in Vermont.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • marriage license
  • identification
Step1
Get a marriage license for the state of Vermont. They cost a little over $20, and expire within 60 days.
Step2
Decide on a date. When choosing a date, it’s best to be flexible to allow you and fiancé more wiggle room in deciding where to have the wedding.
Step3
Choose a location. Vermont is resplendent with natural beauty, but don’t forget some of the more elegant hotels and lodges as possible venues for your vows.
Step4
Get an officiate to perform the ceremony. Judges, Justices of the Peace and ordained members of the church are all able to perform the ceremony.
Step5
Plan the little things. Where will the reception be and what kind of entertainment and refreshments will you have? What about a limo and a honeymoon suite?

Tips & Warnings

  • Have whomever performs your ceremony return the marriage certificate to the county clerk’s office following the wedding. If they don’t, there will be no legal record of your wedding.
  • If you are under the age of 18, you’ll need consent from your parent or guardian to secure a marriage license. The state of Vermont does not grant licenses to applicants under the age of 14.
  • Vermont is one of the few states to currently offer and legally recognize same sex civil unions.
  • If you’ve been divorced, you’ll need to present a certified copy of your divorce papers upon application for your marriage license.
