GoDaddy offers quick automated domain name transfers that can be performed online. If you have problems or questions during the process, GoDaddy also offers assistance by phone. Additionally, GoDaddy offers private registration of transferred domain names, which helps keep your personal information from being open to public view.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Online form of payment
  • Previously registered domain

Transfer Your Domain

Step1
Go to the home page of the GoDaddy Web site (see Resources below). This is where you will begin transferring your domain. Set aside an uninterrupted 15 minutes to half an hour to sit down and make the switch.
Step2
Move your mouse over the the green section marked "Domains." Choose "Transfer a Domain" from the options listed.
Step3
Type the name of the domain you are transferring into the available box. Click the orange "Go" button. Verify whether or not your domain is available for transfer by reading the alert immediately posted.
Step4
Call a "Transfer Concierge" (see Resources below) if you have any problems or click the "Proceed to Checkout" button. Pick the level of service you want to purchase by checking the box in the corresponding space. Click on the orange "Continue" arrow.
Step5
Choose to purchase any additional add-ons or simply proceed to checkout. Pay for your purchase online. Keep a record of the confirmation information.
Step6
Respond in a timely manner to the approval request email you receive from GoDaddy. Approval from the administrative contact for the domain name is necessary before the transfer can be completed. You will also need to approve the transfer again upon contact from your current registrar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Within 24 hours of beginning the transfer process, you should receive an email from GoDaddy that asks you to confirm your intention to transfer the domain name. If you do not receive one, verify with your original registrar that you are listed as the administrative contact for the domain name and that your email address is correctly listed.
  • Check your contract to make sure there are no fees associated with leaving your current domain. If there are, consider whether waiting for the contract to expire or switching saves you money in the long run.
  • Consider private registration to avoid letting spammers see your registration information.
