Tips & Warnings

  • 011 is the dialing prefix used for telephoning abroad from the United States. If you're calling from another country, check which international dialing prefix to use. All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a “+” sign.
  • If you're traveling to Boracay, be aware that your flight will end at the Caticlan-Malay Airport in Caticlan. You then travel by island tricycle to Caticlan's jetty port and take a 15-minute boat ride to Boracay Island.
  • Use the online currency converter on the South East Asian Airlines Web site to see exactly what your flight costs in U.S. dollars.
  • Carry some small bills and change for tips. In the Philippines, tipping is an increasingly customary practice. Although major hotels and restaurants add a service charge of 10 percent, service providers still anticipate a small tip in taxis, restaurants, hotels and some small businesses.
  • Although hospitals in larger cities in the Philippines may offer adequate medical care, the standards may not equal those you'll find in the United States. A cash down payment of estimated medical fees is required for admission into a hospital in the Philippines. Check with your medical insurance company to see if its insurance is accepted overseas for hospitalization and/or medical evacuation. If your insurer does not provide medical evacuation insurance, purchase a travel insurance package that does.
