There are three steps you can take to speed up your computer.
1. Remove spyware and viruses
2. Change start-up programs
3. Change Windows services
4. Delete Temporary Files
The virus and spyware programs will slow the computer down by setting themselves to autostart. To solve this problem the autostart can be disabled.
Disable start-up programs: From the start menu, select run. Then type: msconfig , and click the ok button. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility. Select the 'Startup' tab at the top. Uncheck the programs that you do not want to startup automatically (You can always run these programs manually) Click the ok button and reboot.
Step3
Change windows services: From the Start menu, select Settings - Control Panel Click Administrative Tools Click Services Scroll through the list and double click 'Indexing Service' Select startup type - Manual Click the ok button.
See related article for a detailed explanation of windows services and which are safe to turn off.
Step4
Delete Temporary files.
Delete out files that are in your temp directories, the 'username' will be your login name C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp
Some programs might try and scan your temp folder and the more stuff you have in there the slower your computer will go.
Tips & Warnings
Many virus removal programs have real-time virus scanning. This will slow the computer down. If the virus can be cause by the scanner, it can also be removed when the computer is scanned manually with the program.
Free spyware or virus removal programs:
I would recommend against these. Many free removal programs will slow computers down displaying pop-ups for to buy the upgrade.
