How to Stocking a Bar With the Right Bar Tools

Having a well-stocked bar includes more than just having all the right liquors, wines, beers and mixers. You need to have ice, cups, garnishes, and of course you need to stock your bar with the right bar tools. Without the right bar tools, you will not be able to make the right drinks.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Get a jigger. A jigger is a measuring device that is usually comprised of two cones. One of them is an ounce and the other is an ounce and a half.

  2. Step 2

    Get swizzle sticks or bar spoons. These are for you and your guests to stir drinks with. It looks better than doing it with an old straw, and it gives people something to do with their hands.

  3. Step 3

    Get a Muddler. There are only a handful of drinks that require it, but when you want to make a Mint Julep or Mojito correctly, you will need one to mash the mint.

  4. Step 4

    Get a corkscrew. When you have wine at your bar (and a well-stocked bar should) you will need a corkscrew.

  5. Step 5

    Get an electric mixer/blender. Some of these can have attachments that have juicers. This is a good idea if you have a consistent need for fresh fruit juice.

  6. Step 6

    Buy a paring knife and cutting board. You will need these for slicing fruit wedges.

  7. Step 7

    Get the appropriate glassware. You will need pint glasses, wine glasses, high ball and low ball glasses. Martini glasses, shot glasses and pilsner glasses are also high priorities.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not know how to use a piece of equipment on the list, maybe it is because the drinks you make do not need it. Only buy the tools you think you’ll use.
  • Make a hobby out of home bartending by buying a drink book and experimenting with new drinks or maybe inventing some of your own.
  • The right tools are important, but to avoid a cluttered look you’ll need to have them stored appropriately. Glassware racks and discreet drawers are where most of the items should be most of the time.
  • There are many more tools to make more complex or rare drinks. This list is intended as a beginning point.
