Things You'll Need:

  • Blow-dryer
  • Hair-care products
  1. Step 1

Think long, straight hairstyles have to lie flat? Think again. Even straight hair can be big and sexy if you’ve got the right cut and styling know-how.

  2. Step 2

Get a great cut. Straight, long hair needs some layering to produce volume. Ask your stylist to create surface layers only and cut them at very sharp angles either by using a straight razor or by gliding the blades of the scissors through the surface of your hair. The layers should be long and blend with the rest of the hairstyle.

  3. Step 3

Use a volumizer at the roots of damp hair and a light, silicone-based product on the rest of the hair. Divide hair into two sections, a top one and a bottom one, for easier blow-drying. Pin the top section up and begin drying the bottom section.

  4. Step 4

Blow-dry your hair straight. Use a large vent or paddle brush and dry sections of the hair from the roots to the ends, keeping the nozzle of your blow-dryer aimed at a downward angle to prevent frizz and flyaway hairs. To increase the volume at the roots of your hair, capture sections of your hair with your brush and lift the hair upward 2 or 3 inches. Hold the section there while you dry underneath with the blow-dryer. Let the section cool down for 2 to 3 seconds and then dry the rest of the section straight. Repeat until the entire bottom section is dry.

  5. Step 5

Unpin the top section and repeat the drying process. If your hair is resistant to volume, flip your head upside-down and massage the roots of your hair with your fingers while you blow-dry. Once the roots are dry, flip your head right-side-up again and dry the top layers in sections as before.

  6. Step 6

Flip your head upside-down once more and spray a light-hold hair spray at the roots of your hair. Remain upside-down for a few seconds to allow the hair spray to dry, and then flip right-side-up again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Aerosol hair sprays work best for this style because they dry much faster than the non-aerosol variety.
