Tips & Warnings
  • Thoroughly research before buying a car. Make sure you’re getting a car that suits your needs at an affordable price.
  • Visit the Edmunds site where you'll find car reviews full of useful information, including overall performance metrics, pros and cons and new model features. You will also find critiques of body styles, trim options, engine performance, safety features, interior design and special features. Many reviews contain detailed driving reports and offer suggestions on the best accessories and additions to select.
  • Many auto-trading sites offer special features if you register as a site member. This is usually free, and only requires you to submit your name and an email address. Features include search saves and wish lists to which you can later refer.
  • Note that many sites do not actually sell cars—they provide a place for buyers and sellers to meet but do not participate in transactions. CarsDirect and MyCar are two sites where you can buy new cars. MyCar also offers an auction feature that lets you assemble an auction that invites car dealers in your area to “bid” to sell you a car.
  • Listed prices rarely include sales tax or additional charges such as registration, finance, license and title fees.
