When you install a remote keyless entry system in your truck yourself, you get the convenience and security of a keyless entry system without the additional cost of an installation by a third party. In addition, you will have the satisfaction of having accomplished the task yourself.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Truck
  • Keyless entry system
  1. Step 1

First, find the right keyless entry system for your needs. Consult your dealer and the truck’s manufacturer to find out which systems are compatible with your truck (or how to get the factory installation kit).

  2. Step 2

Shop around locally. Many dealers or auto parts stores will order the kit for you, or direct you to a local store that will have the kit you are looking for.

  3. Step 3

Ask for advice. Every truck is different, and every keyless entry system is different. Gather as much information from instruction books and friendly mechanics as possible.

  4. Step 4

Shop online. When you know the exact kit or piece of equipment you need to complete your keyless entry kit, you can often find it at a bargain from online vendors.

  5. Step 5

Buy a kit and install it. If you are not particularly mechanically inclined, there are keyless-entry kits available for purchase. All you’ll need are some basic tools (such as a screwdriver or socket wrench) and the included instruction manual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set out all the equipment, pieces, parts and tools that you will need to finish the job before you start. Once you start taking your truck apart, it is difficult to drive it anywhere to pick up the socket size you forgot you don't have.
  • Be aware that adding aftermarket accessories of any kind—especially if you install them yourself—may void the warranty of your truck prematurely.
