How to Install a Secure Digital Card in a Dell Axim

The Dell Axim, like nearly every PocketPC, comes equipped with a slot for Secure Digital memory cards. Secure Digital, or SD, is a type of flash memory card format that is used in nearly every portable media and PC device made today. These cards are used to expand the storage space on PC's and personal media device. While the cheapest SD cards hold only megabytes of information, newer and more expensive SD cards will upgrade your device's memory by gigabytes. SD cards are very good investments because of their compatibility with nearly every digital device you own. They can be removed from your Axim and shared with your digital camera or mp3 player. Follow these steps to install a Secure Digital card in a Dell Axim.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Secure digital card
  • Dell Axim
  1. Step 1

Locate the slot. Locate the Secure Digital memory card slot on your Dell Axim. Most personal media devices come with an SD slot. Often this slot is on the side of the device, though in some instances the SD slot can be found inside the battery cavity.

  2. Step 2

Insert the Secure Digital memory card. Secure Digital memory cards slide and click into place. When the SD card meets any resistance, remove it and make sure that you are inserting it correctly. The side with the metallic parts showing should face down and in.

  3. Step 3

Access the SD card. The Dell Axim utilizes a File Explorer program that allows you to explore the files and directories in your devices internal and external memory. To access the information written onto an SD or CF card, click on the Start menu. From the Start menu, access Programs and then File Explorer.

  4. Step 4

Remove the SD memory card. When the time comes to remove the Secure Digital memory card, simply press on it with your finger and it will click inward and then pop out far enough for you to pull it out of the slot.

  5. Step 5

Locate the Write-Protect Tab. On the top of the card there is usually a tab in the corner opposite of the notched diagonally cut corner. This tab resembles similar tabs that have appeared on floppy disks, video tapes and cassettes for years. When closed, this tab allows information to be written to the SD card. When the tab is open or removed, the SD card will not allow new information to be written or stored information to be deleted.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful with the write-protection tab on your SD card. These tabs are very thin and fragile. If you should happen to break the tab off of your card, try covering the opening by carefully placing tape over the area that the tab used to cover. This trick has worked on cassette and video tapes for years.
  • Clearance sections at department stores and electronics dealers are full of memory cards of all formats at lowered prices.
  • Exit all programs before removing a memory card.
  • It is harmful to a memory card if it is removed or if the device is powered down while information is being written to or extracted from the card.
