How to Master the Sphere Grid in Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X introduced the Sphere Grid, an idea unique among RPGs. It's a map of different bonuses and abilities that develop your characters as you earn Spheres to fill in the spots. This system allows all of your characters to learn the abilities of the other characters, making them all flexible. For the newcomer, it can seem complex. We'll walk you through it.
Instructions

1
Move your characters around the grid as they gain levels. You can make 1 move forward for every level or 3 moves backward.
-
2
Use the Spheres you find to fill in the grid for each person. You can fill in a node 1 spot behind and ahead of you.
-
-
3
Use Key Spheres (levels 1 to 4) to unlock new areas of the grid. You most often use this to unlock powerful abilities and to bring characters from one area of the grid into the next. For instance, you may need a Level 3 Key Sphere to bring Tidus into Wakka's path on the grid.
-
4
Some Key Spheres open the path to marginal routes, and others open paths to nothing but blanks. If you are attempting to beat the game in as little time as possible, make sure you want what's behind the Key Sphere before you use it. The only way to get more Key Spheres is by fighting insanely hard Arena bosses!
-
5
Visit the Arena for the best Spheres. Throughout your journey, you will find new Strength, Mana and Speed Spheres, which can be inserted into blank nodes within the Sphere Grid. You may also notice that these nodes offer the maximum bonus as opposed to some of the more rudimentary bonuses (e.g., inserted Strength Spheres will always give +4 Strength, unlike some of the Strength +1 and +2 nodes already present in the grid). You can find more of these Spheres at the Calm Lands Arena.
-
6
Be cautious with your Spheres. Bonus Strength, Mana and Speed Spheres are rare, and getting them into the Arena is a slow, expensive and dangerous process. Ensure that whoever receives them will derive their maximum benefit. For example, Tidus, Auron or Wakka would get the most use out of Strength Spheres, while Yuna or Lula would find them nearly useless.
-
7
Use Clear Spheres to clean up the grid. If you enjoy playing FFX a lot, and are willing to commit to your characters, you can begin eliminating the low-level nodes (Strength +1, HP +100 and the like) with Clear Spheres and replacing them with better Spheres. Obtain Clear Spheres at the Calm Lands Arena, but you also receive a bunch for capturing 10 of every monster in Spira.

Tips & Warnings
If you're looking for a challenge, there are methods in which you do not use the Sphere Grid for the entire game. Try them if you're up for something new.
Cleaning the Sphere Grid is a long and laborious process, but it will leave you with characters that are nigh invincible.
