How to Install Drivers for an Inkjet Printer

When you purchase a new printer, you will need to install the proper driver into the operating system on your computer. This allows your computer and printer to communicate with one another. In short, it allows you to use the printer. Driver installation is simple. Follow these steps to learn how to install drivers for an inkjet printer.

  • Inkjet printer
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Set up your printer. This will require you to assemble the actual unit, unless it comes completely pre-assembled.

  2. Step 2

    Connect the printer to both a power source (the wall outlets or a surge protector) and the computer. To connect the printer to your computer, you will need to use the blue connecting cable packaged with your printer.

  3. Step 3

    Place the printer’s installation CD into your computer’s CD-ROM tray. The printer’s installation CD contains the driver and everything else to get it working.

  4. Step 4

    Access the installation program. To do this, find the CD-ROM icon either on your desktop or by double-clicking on “My Computer.”

  5. Step 5

    Find the installation program and open it. The installation program usually is clearly marked.

  6. Step 6

    Follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver and other printer programs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the computer and printer are plugged in and powered on.
  • Follow all instructions given by the installation disc.
  • Before you buy the printer, make sure it is compatible with your computer.
