How to Connect a Palm OS Device to a Mac

With a Palm OS device, you can keep track of your contacts and appointments on both your Palm and your Mac. Instead of spending hours imputing the same data onto both, you can simply connect your Palm to your Mac and transfer the information. Follow these steps to find out how the synchronize them.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Palm OS device
  • Mac computer
Step1
Install the software you need. Start by downloading iSync 1.2+, iCal 1.5+ and Palm Desktop 4.2.1 onto your Mac’s hard drive.
Step2
Open the HotSync Manager. Once you've installed these programs, open the HotSync Manager located in the Palm folder found under Applications.
Step3
Click "Conduit Settings" from the HotSync menu bar. Open the iSync conduit item and select “Enable iSync for this Palm Device.” Click "OK" to confirm.
Step4
Open the "Address Book/Contacts," "Date Book/Calendar" and "To-Do/Tasks" conduits. Set "Do Nothing" as the default action by selecting the "Radio" button and clicking the "Make Default" button. Click "OK" to confirm and "Quit" to exit the HotSync Manager program.
Step5
Open iSync by selecting the icon from your Mac’s task bar. Once into iSync, you should see your HotSync ID displayed. Select this icon to customize your Palm OS device.
Step6
Customize your Palm OS device to your Mac. Check the desired boxes located next to "Contacts and Calendars."
Step7
Finalize your synchronization by connecting your HotSync cradle or cable to your Mac and Palm OS device. Once connected, push the HotSync button located on the cradle or the HotSync icon found under the "Applications" menu on your Palm OS device. iSync will open automatically and the synchronization process will be complete in several minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can limit your customization by selecting certain categories on the pull down menu.
  • You can also synchronize some Palm OS devices to your Mac using Bluetooth wireless connections.
  • Once your Palm OS device and Mac are synchronized, you can share pictures between the two using iPhoto.
  • Your Mac or Palm OS Device should come with the necessary software. However, before buying one or the other, be sure to ask if all the software you need is included.
