Expect to be surrounded by other travelers. Gatlinburg has a population of just 3,500, but its location draws millions of tourists each year.

Pack for the right weather. Gatlinburg enjoys moderate weather, with four distinct seasons that include warm summers and cold winters that generate lots of snow for skiing and other recreation.

Plan to reach Gatlinburg by car. Gatlinburg does not have an airport, but can be reached via car via US 441, US 411, or US 321.

Enjoy the luxury of off-road travel. SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs and scooters are all available for rental.

Pamper yourself with a limousine using one of Gatlinburg's limo agencies.

Consider the trolley. The bright red Gatlinburg Trolley is the fourth-largest transit system in the state and for a nominal fee will take you most places.

To book accommodations, contact the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce at (800) 588-1817 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below). You can stay at a luxury bed-and-breakfast. Look in the heart of Gatlinburg or at the edges of the mountains for these accommodations.

Rent cabins or chalets in the mountains. Gatlinburg offers the best in luxury cottages.

Try vacation rentals. Most of these are in downtown Gatlinburg and offer views of streams and green spaces in town with distant views of the mountains.

Plan to be outdoors. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the main reason for coming to Gatlinburg.

Celebrate! Gatlinburg is home to Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales, the Midnight Independence Day Parade, "Stand Here" Fireworks Finale, Gatlinburg MountainFest and many other events.
