When recording for a long period of time, usually over 5 minutes, it can become tedious to hold a camcorder. To solve this problem, most camcorder owners invest in a tripod, or a three-legged camcorder holder. Tripods steady the camcorder, ensuring a stable shot, and allowing you to leave the camcorder for a short period of time. Here is how to use a tripod with a camcorder:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a tripod at any electronics store, on the Internet, or at a local discount store. Be sure that the mount is compatible with your camera.

  2. Step 2

Find a good location for the tripod. Depending on the event, you will want to place the tripod where its view is not encumbered and it is away from high-traffic areas where it could be knocked over.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the tripod, per the manufacturer’s directions and place your camera on top. Most camcorders will screw to the top of the tripod.

  4. Step 4

Secure the camcorder on the tripod and adjust the height. You will want it to be above head-level of people sitting or possibly walking in front of the camera.

  5. Step 5

Find the shot and press record. Utilizing the camcorder remote control at this time will make it easier to record.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place the tripod in a location that can easily record your shot, but is also out of the way of others.
  • Research different tripods before buying one. Not all are made the same and many have different features, such as adjustable height.
  • Invest in a good tripod. These are usually very handy, and will be used often when recording.
  • Don’t leave your camera unattended in a public area. Even though it is secure on the tripod, it can always be knocked over or possibly even stolen.
  • Make sure the camcorder is secured correctly to the tripod per the manufacturer’s directions. Not doing this correctly can damage the tripod, the camcorder, or both.
