Step 1
Diversify. Each has their use! While an army composed entirely of knights and griffon riders will roll right over just about anything, it will also be many times more expensive than a larger force of cheaper units. Try not to rely too heavily on any single unit type.
-
Step 2
Take your time. Many scenarios begin with you having next to nothing and the enemy already possessing a heavily fortified base filled with high-level units. Therefore, using a few small units to charge the enemy camp early on is a bad idea!
-
Step 3
Keep your troops alive! This is very important in Warcraft 3, much more so than any of their other strategy games. Your unit cap is much smaller and units are very expensive, so every trooper is valuable! It is also quite simple for healer units and heroes to take care of your troops, so don't hesitate to do so!
-
Step 4
Split the gear between your heroes. Quite a few items are available to help your heroes along, just remember to grab them and distribute them fairly between your heroes. Don't let your favorite hero hog all the goods!
-
Step 5
Smash the huts! Merloc huts, Troll huts...anytime you take out a band of creeps and see a hut or dwelling behind them, break it down! It could contain a valuable item!
-
Step 6
Visit the Goblin Merchants! They provide mercenaries, items and transportation options, all at a reasonable cost.
-
Step 7
Create obstacles. If you like to build walls of defensive towers, have your builders create a couple farms a little ways in front of your wall. This will give the enemy something expendable to attack while your towers pick them apart.
-
Step 8
Use your builders if you have to! All the builder units now have abilities that can be useful in a pinch! Peasants can be armed at a Town Hall/Keep/Castle and be made into Militia, Ghouls are both lumberjacks and basic infantry, Cultists can become useful scouts as Shades and Wisps can sacrifice themselves to destroy summoned units.
-
Step 9
Create special units to attack buildings. Siege engines, catapults, ballistas and meat wagons are all designed to bring down buildings quickly. Use them in your assaults! Many buildings have a nasty bite: undead fortresses have a ranged attack, Orc buildings can be upgraded with spikes and Night Elf structures can uproot and attack! Carelessly attacking buildings can be dangerous!
