Moving is inherently stressful. Fortunately, in many cases there are state guidelines and decent consumer protections if things go wrong. Below are some suggested steps from the California Public Utilities Commission, along with some practical real-world advice based on first-hand experience.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Organizational skills
  1. Step 1

If a problem has occurred, either damage to your stuff or a 'loss' of your items (how do you lose a couch?), you need to submit a claim in writing to the carrier, such as Bekins, who apparently is very good at 'losing' couches!

  2. Step 2

Create a list of all of the lost or damaged items, including a brief description. You will likely need this to correspond to a packing number that may have been on a packing slip.

  3. Step 3

Note the exact amount of 'value' of each lost or damaged item. It's great if you have receipts, which obviously may not be available if the lost item included boxes of your wife's cloting or an antique bookshelf from your grandma's house.

  4. Step 4

Provide on the claim the date of the move, the origin and destination, and the carrier's order number.

  5. Step 5

Send in the form within 9 months of the after delievery of the goods. The carrier must acknowledge the claim in writing within 30 days and must either pay you or state a reason for rejecting the claim within 60 days.

  6. Step 6

If your claim is unsuccessful, you always have the ability to take 'em to court, and/or contact the better business bureau.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay the bill. No matter how tempting (and fair) it might seem, the process cannot start until the carrier is paid. Those are the rules.
  • The PUC can be contacted at 1800-366-4782
  • Prepare to be stonewalled by uninformed and apathetic carrier agents.
