  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Get a large shoebox or shoebox-size plastic box with a lid.

  2. Step 2

Encourage your children to decorate it with stickers, markers, glitter and other artwork to make it special.

  3. Step 3

Start a dress-up accessory collection by going through your jewelry box and removing old costume jewelry, broken items (such as watches that no longer work) and things you don't like anymore. Add them to the box.

  4. Step 4

Sort through old wallets, keys, key chains and small address books. Place the ones you no longer use in the box.

  5. Step 5

Gather together play jewelry and play makeup your children have and add those items to the box as well. Add some of your old makeup brushes or empty makeup containers.

  6. Step 6

Buy or make some play money and credit cards, or use expired coupons and unusable cards, such as for video rental stores that are closed. Toss these in the box.

  7. Step 7

Find some old hair accessories, combs, brushes and play mirrors and add these to the collection.

  8. Step 8

Let your children (especially girls, but young boys will enjoy this as well) go through the box and explore all the items and dress themselves and you up. Encourage them to be creative with the items, clipping earrings to clothes, wrapping beads around ponytails -anything that strikes their fancy.

  9. Step 9

Keep the box in a closet and add to it as you come across more items for it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not place small or sharp items in the box such as pins or small earrings - they present a choking hazard.
