1. Know that Alfa Romeos are hardy little cars but that many have not been properly maintained.

2. Realize that the main problem is worn second-gear synchro, failed head gaskets and, of course, rust.

3. Consider the Alfa Spider for a fun, usable car. Cars built after 1982 have the more reliable Bosch fuel injection and will make excellent daily drivers.

4. Check out the Guilia Spider (built from 1962 to 1965) for a gorgeous classic that is undervalued compared to many classic cars today.

5. Consider the GTV in coupe form (built from 1967 to 1974) for a beautiful mix of style and performance. These cars have held their value well.

Tips & Warnings

• Know that most cars built from 1969 to 1981 come equipped with Spica Fuel Injection. Many people find this system hard to adjust properly.
• The GTV6 (built from 1979 to 1986) may represent a great bargain, if you can find one in good condition.
• Be sure to have a mechanic who is familiar with Alfa Romeos inspect any car before you buy it.
• Alfa Romeo stopped selling their cars in the United States in the mid 1990s.
